What are your comfort foods that you remember from your childhood? Cinnamon toast, banana pudding, sweet potato pie, chicken and dumplings, beef pot roast with sweet potatoes and; don't laugh, fruit cake. Those are some of mine.
My mother used to make the best fruitcake. Lots of pecans and candied fruit. She would soak a clean cloth in whiskey or rum and wrap the cake and leave it for a week or so. I know many people hate fruitcake but hers was very tasty. I have never been able to duplicate it.
And also I was just thinking the other day how much I missed having banana pudding. I told Mr C. that I was going to make a banana pudding for supper one day soon. That's all. We could just eat the pudding and call it supper.
Yummy.

Comfort foods? I'm afraid to open this pandora's box Chancy. But as long as I can remember...I've LOVED butter and jelly toast. Loved it! I use to eat slice after slice...especially when my grandmother made it for me. I tend to lean toward something sweet when I'm upset or stressed...like cake or cookies or candy. Hmmm, that explains a few things. Of course I've had my salty junk food binges too...potato chips, snack foods....then, there's always pizza. See what I mean?
Comfort foods from my childhood.. all of them leave me thinking of my mom. Potato pancakes, Sunday roast beef dinners, blueberry perogies.. just to mention a few.
I lived with my great-aunt my last two years of high school, and she made chicken and dumbplings to die for. My mother's pumpkin pie is very, very good and I love to have it for breakfast (can you tell I have a set of great-grandparents from New England?) the day after a holiday. Biscuits and gravy! (And a set from the deep south!)
Cinnamon toast...always special as I got it when I was home sick. Home made bread was another piled high with freshly churned butter.
Ummmm, fruitcake. I love it so much I'm collecting recipes. Real mac and cheese with the baked topping. Meatloaf. Pineapple unside down cake. At least there is no dieting or food restrictions in memories!
I have so many comfort foods that the list would be very long! The thing I remembered most when I first read this is butterscotch pudding, the old kind, with a skin on top. It was so rich and creamy under that skin, and no modern-day counterpart has the same rich flavor.
I never tired of my Mom's fried chicken that just fell off the bone - liked it hot or cold. Her fruit pies were to die for, pumpkin a favorite, too. Also loved tapioca pudding.
I love fruitcake, but not the dark kind -- only the light cake with no citron. Best I had from years ago was called Texas Fruitcake. Another company owns it now and the pecans and fruit keep decreasing in number, so not nearly as good.
My mother-in-law made a delicious sausage cake which she wrapped in a bourbon soaked cheesecloth. Always thought she must have brought the recipe from the south.
