Project Gutenberg

Project Gutenberg

This site is amazing. Graphically it is extremely plain but the content is awesome. Thousands of books which are no longer under copyright protection are here, ready to be read on line or downloaded. They even have audio books although I have not tried these. I still prefer a book or newspaper that I hold in my hand and read but this Project Gutenberg is a treasure trove of Mark Twain, Charles Dickens, and many many others both fiction and non fiction.

For instance I have an ancient book "The White House Cook Book" published in 1898 which I bought in a little antique shop about 15 years ago. It is interesting to dip in and out of especially to read some of the old fashioned health tips. My copy is falling apart. I went to Project Gutenberg and lo and behold there in its entirety was "The White House Cookbook" http://www.gutenberg.org/files/13923/13923-h/13923-h.htm

Check out this site. You will like it.

Remember reading about this some time ago, but had forgotten. Thanks for the link.

Maybe this will be as almost as good as browsing old used book stores. So few left now. Only one left in our small community last I knew. We use to have three.

Thanks Chancy, I have spent a half hour just browsing the site and have marked it as a favorite so that I can go back soon.

Chancy dear,
You are my reference librarian. I so appreciate all the great links you introduced to me. For an old chick you are VERY sharp!
This is a wonderful link and remind me that I actually saw an original Gutenberg Bible at the Smithsonian years ago. I also loved the illustrated manuscripts there. So much to see and learn!
love,
lucyd

I, too, have one of those really old White House Cookbooks. I found mine on Ebay. I know there are more recent editions published during different administrations. Thanks for the link, you do come up with really great stuff.

It is an amazing site. A week ago or so, I ordered Pride and Prejudice through Amazon, and then remembered Gutenberg. I downloaded the whole book from them.
I'm still happy to have the book ;) but it kept me from being too impatient.
