"Scents" of smell

Roger B. on his most excellent blog, "There's Always Something" recently posted about some of his favorite scents:

This got me to thinking so I commented to Roger:

"Roger, this post conjured up so many glorious smells for me and yes, sometimes we are not appreciative enough of all our senses.

One scent that stayed with me for years was, indeed, "the scent of a woman." When my husband and I lived in Washington D.C. for 4 years we had an apartment at the Watergate. Claire Boothe Luce, the widow of Henry Luce who started "Time" and "Life" magazines, had two penthouse apartments there and we would sometimes ride the elevator with her. I always silently admired the lovely scent about her. Not too sweet, not overpowering, but just right.

Some years later, when we were back in Atlanta I started remembering the scent of Mrs. Luce's perfume and I wanted to duplicate it if possible. But how to find out. Claire Boothe Luce was now deceased.

I decided to Google her name and I came up with a book by Letitia Baldridge who was Mrs Luce's personal assistant for many years including when she served as Ambassador to Rome from the US. I found the book, and lo and behold. Ms Baldridge revealed that Mrs Luce wore the French perfume, "Joy" by Jean Patou. She mixed it with another lighter fragrance.

Amazing what one can discover with a "good Google"

My sweet husband bought me a bottle of "Joy" last Mother's Day and I mix it with "Cefiro" by Floris of London

Works for me:)"

What are some of your favorite aromas? Cinnamon apple pie baking in the oven, honey suckle on a summer's evening, a baby's skin after a refreshing bath...a fresh Christmas tree-------
or whatever

A very good topic, Chancy! Some of my favorites are honeysuckle on a summer evening breeze, babies, my grandmother's chicken and dumplings, my mother's fried chicken, blue bird roses and Shalimar perfume (which I cannot wear because mr. kenju doesn't like it!).

Kenju...Ah yes...We have to please the men in our lives..and rightly so.

And I too love the smell and taste of chicken and dumplings. My husband's mother made the best chicken and dumplings when we would visit her. I do not have that talent.

I like the scent of a campfire in the woods, pine trees, and bacon cooked outside. It sounds like I like camping, but I don't. Just the smells.

I love Shalimar and Joy, and Sublime by Jean Patou is sublime.

My husband was allergic to perfume so I never wore it and to this day I don't wear perfume.

As far as the "Scents of smell" I love the smell of chicken soup cooking, fresh baked apple pie and if you can smell it, a fresh ocean breeze!

Oh, Chancy, what a wonderful subject. Some of my favorite scents are sun-dried sheets, the "perfume" one has of lotion, sand, and ocean after a day at the beach, and puppy breath.

Suzz What an original and dear favorite scent...

"Puppy Breath"

I have to agree...;)

So many wonderful smells .. right now it would have to be spring blossoms. Isn't it amazing how a scent can trigger a memory.

It is amazing what the Internet has provided for us. Also, interesting, my husband bought me Joy one year and I found it too strong and didn't wear it. I like soap/citris smells with just a light floral essence. Unfortunately, I have worked with some many people who have allergies that I long ago gave up wearing any perfume.

I've mostly given up the use of artifical aromas that are present in so many products today. Somewhere along the years I found the scent of too many perfumes caused the inside of my head to feel as though it was on fire. I tired of experimenting to find which ones were acceptable and which ones not.

Many flower aromas are pleasant, especially my Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow bush, the aromas of most food cooking, or baking in the oven. I love the fresh smells after a light summer shower, the scent of the ocean, the cool clear fresh mountain air, sun dried sheets, a newly bathed baby.

Lilacs!!! Fresh home-baked bread --cinnamon rolls, too! babies, vanilla, and the breeze off the Gulf at Sanibel. My favorite perfumes are Opium, Oscar and Obsession.
