When I was growing up the custom on Mother's Day was to wear a flower honoring our mothers. If your mother was living you wore a red rose or other flower. If she was deceased you wore a white flower. I do not know if this was just a southern custom or if was nation wide.
My father died when I was nine but my mother lived to be 91 years old. When she died I was 55. I was fortunate to have her for so long. She got to enjoy our three children and they were devoted to her. She lived with us for 13 years and we had a built in sitter when my husband and I went out.
Today, there is so much I would like to talk over with my Mother. Now that I too have grown old, I understand the aches and pains and concerns and worries that she had back then. When I was younger I simply did not have enough patience and empathy and for that I am sorry.
Now, every night as I turn the living room lights off I pass by my Mother's picture when she was a young woman of about 25, I blow her a kiss goodnight and tell her that I love her.
All I can do now is hope she understands.

Chancy, that was the custom in WV where I grew up. What you wrote about blowing your mom a kiss is so sweet.
What a lovely post. Mother's Day in France is not on the same date as in the US or in the UK. Here it's in June. And they only started celebrating Mother's Day in occupied France during WWII.
I loved what you wrote about your mother. I too am starting to understand things that I had no patience for when I was young. h
She understands. She understands...
I was always too wrapped up in my own life to be very sympathetic to my mom's life. Funny thing, she seemed to be wrapped up in my life, too. I guess we both just loved me a lot. I hope I've grown up and that if she were here I'd be less selfish. She was good.
Oh Chancy....how beautiful. You made me misty-eyed; not just from your lovely words, but because I know your mom absolutely understands. Happy Mother's Day sweet friend...
Oh Chancy, what a lovely tribute to your mom!
I feel the same way about my grandmother who raised me..."I hope she understands."
It sounds to me as if you have been a most wonderful daughter for your mom--she lived with you for 13 years; I feel you two had wonderful quality time together.
I also remember well the coursages we would wear; me and my grandmother. My own mom would have them delivered to us from the florist in time to wear them to church on Sunday. This was tradition in the coalfields of West Virginia where I grew up as well. Thanks for rekindling my memories of this.
I have been intending to comment on your pet stories, as soon as I make some special time. I do have pet stories. Perhaps I should post an entry on my site in regard to yours. :)
What a lovely tribute to your mother, Chancy!
You expressed so well the same sentiments I have about my mother and I, too, hope she understands.
Your comment on "Time Goes By" where you noted that you are an atlantan, brought me, a sister from the same city, to your blog.
Your Mother's Day post resonates with a key message in the one I just posted -- on my mother's birthday. A year of reading blogs such as yours has given me courage to share openly, as you do here, some sorrow and sweetness about her.
I am beginning to think mother could or would have been a blogger had the tools been around maybe three decades ago.
