Are you ready for a vent.
If not then read no further!!!
In addition to my two bum knees I have been having a problem with balance and pain and stiffness upon arising after sitting for any length of time. My internist, the best doctor God ever put on this earth, recommended I see an arthritis specialist. I went today.
This arthritis doctor was a real dud. His Physicians Assistant took all the info. Then Doctor came in with this greeting:
"Hello young lady and young man" ( I hate that condescending tone)
Within 3 minutes he determined that I did NOT have arthritis. He basically said that I was "OLD and OUT OF SHAPE" Duh !!!!!
He wrote script for physical therapy. He must have mentioned old or aged or in your 70's and 80's a dozen times.I was hopping mad before I got out of there.(I will be 80 in December)
DOPE!!!!
Will not go back to him..At least I don't have arthritis. How he could make a diagnosis in 3 or 4 minutes I don't know.
Holier than thou and abrasive.
Couldn't wait to get out of there.
I have an appointment to see another knee doc in September and between now and then I will work on loosing weight, walking and try to"heal myself"
PS:
I am going to drink the gin and throw away the gin and raisins.
Cheers

So the gin and raisins didn't work for you? Sorry to hear that, as I was going to try it.
I don't see how they can diagnose your problem without x-rays.
He observed your age and your weight and diagnosed from just that it appears. I do hope that you don't give up on your health inspite of bad doctors. Start walking and walk and walk and walk each and every day. That should start the help with weight and exercise issue. Remember aging is not for sissies.
Kenju The gin and raisins might just work for you. Worth a try anyway.
Tabor-- Good advice --Thanks
Good thinking about throwing away the gin soaked raisins. Since you don't have arthritis the gin will make you feel a heck of a lot better. (Or not.) ;-)
Chancy--I would surely talk to the internist about your experience. It can't hurt (perhaps some light may be shed upon your experience with the specialist) and it might convince the internist not to refer any more patients to the specialist. Bummer, bummer, bummer!
My own internist, whom I've been seeing for nearly 15 years, now, is great! ONCE, she mentioned that I should lose some weight. Since then she has had the good sense to know that I remember what she said, even if I've not complied!
Better luck next time!

On second thought maybe the "gin and raisins" cured my "arthritis"
before I ever went to the "arthritis doctor" ;)
Cop Car.
Good thought but my internist is such a rare jewel I do not want to say anything about his recommendation and risk a misunderstanding.
In other words, I am chicken.
I don't know how they can come up with a diagnosis in such a short time either Janet. No x-rays...or tests...nothing...very weird. I've been dieting and doing some stretching exercises to keep my achy muscles in my lower back and hips stretched out because I sit so long at the computer. I got them from the physical therapist. I was getting very stiff too, and then I pulled something in my hip last year that made it worse. I was told I had a little arthritis in my lower back, but I had a CAT Scan done for kidney stones a couple of years ago, and that just happened to show some slight signs of arthritis too...although it really doesn't bother me all that much. I think the stretching helps. I need to walk more too. I'm not always the perfect example of what you SHOULD do. Hey, maybe I should try those gin and raisins. Good luck sweetie...
There is no excuse for this kind of behaviour from a physician. Admittedly not every doc has the best bedside manner.. but making a diagnosis based on what seems a biased impression, with out the expected x-rays and diagnostic tools borders on malpractice. Definitely get a second opinion. Well, actually a first I guess... as this initial one is lacking in many ways.
