One of the many things I am thankful for is slacks for women. I live in pants and very seldom do I struggle into panty hose and a skirt. I have several nice skirts and I may perhaps wear them with tights this winter but my apparel of choice is a comfy pair of pants and a top and perhaps a cardigan or pull over sweater layered.
I remember when I got my first pair of blue jeans. I was 15 years old and my two girlfriends and I went downtown and shopped in the boys department for a pair of Levis. We felt slightly risque as we rolled the pants legs up to just below the knees and reveled in our new wardrobe. Those jeans lasted forever and ever. I wish I had saved them since a pair of Levis from 1944 would probably help finance our retirement. Collectors item.
I suppose the advent of pants for women harkens back to WW2 and the women who were called upon to work in defense plants. Prior to that only "daring, avant guard actresses like Katherine Hepburn wore slacks.
Just notice in old movies from the 40's and many times even the 50s women were dressed in skirts or dresses most of the time.
Many of you are not old enough to remember the times of which I write but you probably are also thankful for the freedom of slacks also.
I say Hip Hip Hooray for the comfort and freedom of slacks.
The times they sure are a' changing.

Hippy, hippy hooray for slacks and jeans! My sentiments exactly!
Me too, thank goodness for slacks.
I remember trying to buy pantihose that would fit - they were either to long, to short, to tight or to loose.
On one occasion I was on the dance floor and my pantihose were slowly dropping from my body!! I had to go to the ladies room and take them off.
In high school, we were not allowed to wear pants, jeans or slacks. I hated trudging off to school in the winter, trying to stay warm in a skirt and no stockings.
I have skirts for the summer, when I can wear sandals, but pantyhose? Never. I tried to wear a pair this summer and found that the elastic had dry rotted. I have no idea how old they were (although they were never worn).
Hooray for jeans! Once I had my first pair, I drove my family crazy insisting I be allowed to wear jeans all the time -- except for school, church and "dress-up" occasions.
I just read, Millie, that pantihose may be coming back. I'll sure avoid buying them if possible.
The best thing that ever happened was when pant suits became acceptable for women. I'll never give them up. I've worn pants of various fabric from flimsy, soft and lovely to heavier more endurable type for work -- love 'em.
I wish Levis would still fit me like they did when I was young. I love those Levis and the jeans they make now just don't compare.
Hose? I have put on "tights" in the winter but haven't worn panty hose but maybe twice, with cocktail things... in the last couple of years.
But have you noticed... the dresses are really big with teeangers now... Worn with tights underneath.
I couldn't agree more Chancy. I live in slacks and can't imagine it any other way. I can't remember the last time I actually wore pantyhose....some special occasion I'm sure.
I remember a time back in the early 1960's when I bought what would be called "a nice pants suit" today. A few of my friends were appalled that I wore it on a semi-dressing occasion. How things have changed, and how glad I am! I haven't owned a skirt or dress in years now; my last memory of wearing one is from 1996. Pants are comfortable, and these days they come in versions suitable for everything from gardening to a formal gala. Besides, they hide my perpetually swollen ankle. How liberating!
I blogged once about a mess I got into upon wearing slacks the last day of school as I was graduating from the 8th grade. Our Home Economics teacher was beside herself with such a blatent action!

Chancy, when I went to school, pants were forbidden except when it started freezing, in which case, we were allowed to wear pants with a skirt over them. Can you imagine how elegant that was ?
Anyway, like you, I loooooove pants and I don't even own a skirt anymore.
Teachers would never have thought of wearing slacks when I first started teaching. The first break-through was in the '60's and it had to be a slacks suit and one that looked "professional."
Now I live in comfortable jeans or slacks and would never want to go back to dresses and panty hose.
I wear dressed to weddings. I think that's about the list.
Slacks and jeans are so much easier to wear.

Although my first slacks were bought in 1954, they were boys' jeans too! And now, it's been years since I've worn a skirt. The few I own are ankle length, so I don't have to do the pantihose thing ever again.
The last time I wore a skirt with hose and heels was in 1993 for a job interview -- and never wore a skirt to the job.
I'm tagging you for a meme.
I'm in jeans or slacks 99.9% of the time. I'm so glad to read this post and all the comments that reassure me I'm not alone in that habit. Like most women who grew up in the 60's, I didn't start wearing "pants" until after I graduated high school. That's when liberation started for me!
a post script:
I didn't mean 60's; I meant 1950's. Damn 6 jumped in the way as my finger jabbed at the 5!
I love them too, Chancy, but sometimes I love a skirt - as today, when the temp is 75*+. I couldn't wear slacks to school when I was young - and I hated having to wear skirts in very cold temps and snow.
I so agree and still live in my blue jeans.
