Jenny Joseph's 'Famous Poem'
"When I am Old
I will wear Purple!
When I am an old woman,
I shall wear purple - -
With a red hat which doesn't go,
and doesn't suit me.
And I shall spend my pension
on brandy and summer gloves and satin sandles,
And say we've no money for butter.
I shall sit down on the pavement when I'm tired
and gobble up samples in shops
and press alarm bells
and run with my stick along public railings,
and make up for the sobriety of my youth.
I shall go out in my slippers in the rain
and pick flowers in other people's gardens
and learn to spit!
You can wear terrible shirts and grow more fat
and eat three pounds of sausages at ago,
or only bread and pickles for a week,
and hoard pens and pencils
and beermats and things in boxes.
But now we must have clothes that keep us dry,
and pay our rent
and not swear in the street,
and set a good example for the children.
We must have friends to dinner
and read the papers.
But maybe I ought to practice a little now?
So people who know me
are not too shocked and surprised
when suddenly I am old,
And start to wear purple!"
--Jenny Joseph
I need to start practicing this attitude now; for I am already "old" :)

Just don't join the "Red Hat Club" for goodness sake!
Roger
Roger I surely won't.
I haven't worn a hat of any sort in many, many years. I do remember when "LADIES" did wear hats to church and at some social functions. I was never a big fan of ladies hats.
I used to love to see men in hats. Snappy looking felts, or a Bear Bryant houndstooth sport hat. But JFK was responsible for the deminse of men's hats when he went hatless during the campaign and even at his innaugaration in that cold Washington DC January so long ago.
"Three pounds of sausages....."
I'd like to give that a try! I can eat lots of sausages!
I love purple. So I should make a good "old" person
A "friend" sent that poem to me recently. I wasnt quite sure what he meant by that...but I agree about not joining the "Red Hat Club". I know people that love it but It's not for me, either.
