My Day

At almost 78, I have been ruminating about getting old and I am not sure I like it.I used to be the youngest. Youngest in my family. Youngest in my class with a December birthday. And I am always younger than my hubby Sam who was born in March. But dang it, suddenly I feel O-L-D.

On top of that, today was tiring. First I went to the doctor for a simple blood test for cholesterol and also got a flu shot. After the doctor, and since Target is nearby, I stopped in and picked up a few things. Since I had to fast for the blood test I bought a Snickers bar and ate it on the way back from Target.

I was home for about an hour and then I left for a routine appointment with my eye doctor for a six month check up. I never like to make two medical type appointments on the same day but this one was unavoidable since my eye doctor had to reschedule since he was leaving town,

My appointment was at 2:40 PM. I left my home at 2 PM for a 30 minute drive to the medical office. I had to sit and wait and wait and wait in the doctor's office as he was overbooked. I began to get woozy and I remembered I had not really eaten all day so I had to ask the nurse for juice or candy for a quick blood sugar fix. I am not diabetic. Just hypoglycemic.

Finally, after having my eyes dilated, examined, photographed, pressure measured and getting a report that all is well with my eyesight for the next 6 months I went out into the bright sunlight which blinded me for a time even with sunglasses. A pesky detour on my normal route home (new sewers construction) made the drive less than pleasant.

When I finally arrived back home after 3 grueling hours all total, I rushed in and had hubby fix me a quick PB&J sandwich and a glass of milk. After about 30 minutes I felt better.

I learned three lessons today

Always eat some protein
Do not make two doctors appointments on the same day

AND
Old age is not for sissies

Chancy, I am sorry that you had such a bad day. Come over and see my Maxine cartoons; maybe they will cheer you up a little.

Thanks for the advice. I will try to remember not to book 2 appt's in one day!

Clancy, I can relate to what you wrote about. You certainly had a bad day.

I've had those too and have learned, (and try to remember) not to plan too much in one day.

If I go to the supermarket for a big shopping, that's all I do that day. It's enough to go parading around the market, putting the things in the car and then to have unload them.

I always keep some peanut butter crackers in my bag just incase. If I don't eat for a long time I get faint so they are my insurance.

When I recently had my eyes dilated the doctor told me not to drive after having the eyes dilated so I arranged for a ride to and from.

My sight was blurry for a few hours afterwards. I'm surprised he didn't suggest you get a ride.

Getting old sure isn't fun but it beats the alternative. ;-)

Awwwwww Chancy -- I hope hubby gave you a hig, too. I tend to be hypoglycemic, too and share your pain and dizzy spells. I carry a candy bar just in case.

I hate the way doctors overbook -- it's like your time isn't important. Last time I went I told them that I'd missed enough time from work -- just send me my scrips and my next appointment. Rude? Maybe but making me sit for ages is rude, too! Grrrrrrrrrr

Hope better days prevail!

The other lesson which I have learned after children and grandchildren is always pack an apple and/or granola bar.

That was one very busy and full day.. no matter what your age. And what is it that has these eye doctors over book to such a degree. This seems to be the case more often than not. I think it is just plain disrespectful of their patients time.

Sorry you had a bad day, Chancy. I need to go to the lab, too, but keep putting it off because you have to climb steps to get to the doctor's clinic. After my blood work, I get to go home and make another appointment to see the doctor two days later, and climb those stairs again. Last time I had bloodwork done, I asked them to just call me with the results. There's no reason to have to go twice in one week. Gripe, grumble, gripe.

What an awful day. I also am hypoglycemic, and never travel on an uncertain day without a half of a cheese sandwich in my purse. It has saved me on many occassions.

I hate appointments of any type. And two in a day sounds like a small nightmare.
